4 Part Lesson — Marcelo explains his strategy for winning the upper hand straight from the jump with good hand-fighting skills; if you can master this aspect of play, you can impose your game before your opponent can. Keep your hands on top of your opponent's while standing until you can harden your fingers around his wrist. The harder you squeeze, the larger the reaction from your opponent in which you can take advantage of his expanding movement when he tries to escape. If one hand isn't enough to insight a big enough window for attack, dedicate two hands to holding a single wrist. Don't let the opponent inhibit your progress by letting him or her latch onto your wrist with the other free hand. If your opponent is above your hands in the exchange, you may grab his wrists from below as long as you push his hand up, bending your forearm away from his counter-grips. Time and space your shot accordingly; your opponent will almost always escape his wrist from between your fingers and thumb.
