Breaking The Closed Guard → Double Knee vs Open Guard
Marcelo nullifies the Spider Guard after breaking the Closed Guard: [I] Use the opponent's gi to pull yourself close in a crouch in toward the opponent with your knee defending the recomposition of the Closed Guard. Keep your shoulders low and away from the opponent's attempts to kick you away for distance and Spider Controls, e.g. Lasso, Stirrup. Drive your knee down onto the leg enough for your other foot to tuck inside the knee and fall over into Side Control. Use the lapel to pull yourself closer and closer to upper body control like a rope. [II] If your opponent's foot is raised up to block you from driving over with both knees as before, cross over your knee in the style of a Knee Slide to pass. However, keep your base low and heavy next to the opponent's hip; don't drive your knee far over like a true slide, otherwise you run the risk of losing pressure to secure the pass. [III] If you encounter difficulty making space for the first set of passing transitions, try making a move simply to Half Mount. Keep tight with the grips on the lapels and inch yourself closer and closer until the opponent realizes the futility of the Double Sleeve Grips and releases them to frame. When he makes this move, secure Underhook and Head Control to stabilize the position for the pass.
