Tony inquires Marcelo regarding X-Guard sweep strategies against well-balanced, strong, and large opponents. If you test their balance and rattle their lead leg to no avail from 1Leg-X, this should prompt you to switch to Full-X. Rather than take the opponent in the already tested direction, in this case backward, Marcelo suggests switching things up by redirecting effort toward the Tree-Top / Single-Leg / Take-Up Sweep (aka Takedown Sweep, Joga-Fora-no-Lixo, Dump, et al.) from X-Guard. You may utilize a grip on the opponent's belt to help steer their weight onto your hooks. The trick in executing the technique cleanly is to find the path of least resistance for your attempt to curl forward and sit up into base. Align your X-Hooks and your shoulders in parallel the moment you load the opponent's weight overhead for the Take-Up. Use the grip on the belt to press the opponent onto your X-Hooks as they outstretch and thrust the opponent's weight off of your back. Keep tight control over the Tree-Top Single Leg (i.e. the Underhook of the opponent's leg) and place some of the weight onto your shoulder as you rise. If for some reason the opponent turns away and exposes his or her back, be prepared to capture the hips with a rear waist-lock/bodylock before hopping on for the Seatbelt.
