Rear Cross Lapel & Cross Collar Control
Marcelo helps Jon understand how and when he should obtain and employ a Rear/Cross Lapel Grip with an Under-hook from the Butterfly/Half-Guard. This control proves to be a useful tool in one's arsenal when playing to sit up from your Half-Guard while pummeling for an Under-Hook. Avoiding your opponent's Cross-Face by hiding your ear on the biceps of your Collar/Lapel-hand. Extend your Under-hook as far around as possible so you can easily reach for the grip-switch and secure a quick pass-off of your opponent's skirt-tail into your awaiting hand. Take away any slack after, and not before, passing your opponent's lapel; otherwise, you may give your opponent time to counter you with the Cross-face or even pummel out your Under-Hook for their own. Prevent your opponent from pummeling against your Rear/Cross Lapel Control by securing a Cross-Grip on your opponent's shoulder. This auxiliary grip can act as a frame and help take their weight off-line, allowing you to sit up readily and gain either back exposure and/or sweeping potential. Although these grips provide a highly rewarding and stable top pinning position, in terms of Marcelo's game, he considers the moment to secure them more of an opportunistic or opponent-specific circumstance, rather than an algorithmic sequence that he can generally apply and act as a primary attack.
