Marcelo urges Mark to develop a high-level approach in upgrading position through transition: When ahead of your opponent, one must look to take more than is apparently offered by anticipating future mistakes in your opponent's defenses; e.g. the Crucifix is a natural follow-up after taking someone's back, however, the window of opportunity to capture it can be fleeting against highly-skilled opponents. Rather than hunt down the position after reestablishing top control, one should tune their game to acquire the Crucifix mid-transition. This requires a fine-tuned sense of balance and a keen awareness of anticipating your opponent's options. If you time your spin around towards the back from Side Control, you can land on the opposite side with your foot all ready in position to catch your opponent's arm in the Crucifix as they turtle.
