Marcelo and Greg discuss the timing inherent in the success of two interrelated Turning Pass counters: The Elbow Push Escape and the Underhook and Head Control Sweep. If your opponent turns and you have an underhook deep enough to connect your hands together, use your butterfly hook from half guard to load him up before you bridge and kick him over for the sweep. If he pummels for the underhook, i.e. putting his elbow in your armpit, immediately grab onto his tricep and begin to sit up on your hand or elbow for the Elbow Push. You have to trust that once you secure this position, you can release your half guard because the opponent will not be able to establish the pass once you begin pushing away.

What does Marcelo advocate for someone who opts for a shoulder pressure cross-face while doing the turning pass? I've seen one instructional where Marcelo shows the elbow push escape, but is there anything else? (sometimes people counter my elbow push escape attempt by putting weight on their own elbow, which makes it very hard for me to transfer their arm across my body; maybe my technique just isn't good enough yet)
