Hand Fighting from Side Control, Step Over Armbar from Side Control
2-Part Advanced Lesson -- Braulio employs a prophylactic approach towards a submission: Prevent your opponent from developing any counter-offensive measures by emphasizing control over both of their elbows; controlling the far elbow will prevent most hip-escape and sit-up methods of recovery, while capturing the near-side arm can facilitate a pathway into a potential finish. Collect your opponent's near-side elbow by maneuvering into a Modified Scarf-Hold Position (a.k.a. Kuzure-Kesa-Gatame from Judo Newaza). Shelving their arm atop your thigh will prevent them from making base with the ground and developing useful momentum for an escape. When looking to deliver your far-leg across your opponent's face for the armlock, don't shift forward; rather, shift your hips away from their head to allow your foot to pass over much more readily. [7:07] Simultaneously, block your opponent from sitting their head up and also still caging their hand from an evasive pummel. Use your hand to help push their head down while maintaining a strong elbow-knee connection to keep their elbow in danger of hyperextension.
