Hip Escape
Paul educates his class during warm-ups about how to properly execute the Hip-Escape (Ebi, Shrimping, Snaking, et al.); a movement invariably considered to be a rudiment of a grappler's training foundation and the basic skill of ground fighting. The bent leg, of which is on top after turning onto your opposite side, is the primary mechanism employed for generating motion and lifting your hips from the ground. Your bottom leg, remains unstressed until it bends in preparation for a consecutive Hip Escape performed on the opposite side of your body. The bottom leg can be used to push off the mat; however, this particular variation of the standard movement is typically appropriate for more advanced application -- namely, inversions.
